Feeding Evaluation

Feeding Evaluation

Dr. Mattie provides feeding evaluations, which includes review of breast and/or bottle-feeding history, birth and medical history, current symptoms, and infant oral examination. She works in concert with IBCLCs, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and the baby’s primary care provider.

Babies are often referred for a feeding evaluation because their provider suspects a tongue or lip tie. If a tongue or lip tie procedure (frenotomy) is recommended, Dr. Mattie will describe the procedure in detail and can perform it during the consultation visit. Aftercare will be reviewed with family by Dr. Mattie and a follow-up visit to assess frenotomy site will be scheduled about a week after the procedure.

Frenotomy Procedure

Dr. Mattie performs both tongue and lip tie procedures for babies under 3 months of age. This is an in-office minor surgical procedure that takes less than a few minutes. Pain reliever will be offered prior to the procedure and may include a 24% sucrose solution and/or infant Tylenol. Your baby will then be swaddled and positioned by a medical assistant. Dr. Mattie then uses special scissors to perform the procedure. Parents are encouraged to stay in the room during the procedure and will be handed their baby immediately following the procedure to feed either from breast or bottle. Dr. Mattie will be available to assist with comforting and feeding post-procedure.

Please bring to the visit

  • If breastfeeding, please bring whatever you use for breastfeeding, including nipple shields, SNS, etc.
  • We have breastfeeding pillows available in office.
  • If bottle feeding, please bring bottles of expressed milk or formula.
  • Baby’s weight history, including at birth.
